Board Approves Land Permit for Gahcho Kue
Final Regulatory Steps Follow in 2014

RAPAPORT... Construction is one step closer for a major diamond mining project in the Canadian Tundra, according to Tony Guthrie, the CEO of De Beers Canada, following the approval of a land-use permit for the Gahcho Kue diamond mine.
Guthrie announced today that the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board gave the green light for land-based site work to begin in preparation for the 2014 winter road season at Gahcho Kue. The final regulatory step that will allow full construction and development of the mine is expected in 2014, according to Guthrie, who said the mine will not only boost Canada's economy but will continue to solidify the country's positioning as a top diamond producer.
"The construction and operational phases of Gahcho Kue will benefit the Canadian economy and local communities, creating new business and employment opportunities for residents of the Northwest Territories," Guthrie said in a press release.
During its two-year construction phase, Gahcho Kue, which is a joint venture between De Beers and Mountain Province Diamonds, is expected to create approximately 700 jobs in the construction phase and about 400 for the remaining 11 years of the mine's operation. The companies estimate that 31 million tonnes of ore containing roughly 49 million carats will be mined during the life of the project.
