U.S. Polished Diamond Imports +1% in Nov.

RAPAPORT... U.S. polished diamond imports registered a slight increase of 1.2 percent year on year to $1.897 billion in November 2013. However, the average price per carat surged nearly 27 percent to $2,434. Polished exports jumped 23 percent to $1.595 billion, leaving net polished imports plummeting 48 percent to $302 million.
Rough imports surged in November, up 49 percent to $73 million, while rough exports fell 39 percent to $24 million. Net rough imports grew to $49 million compared to $10 million one year earlier.
The net diamond account in November, which represents the total polished and rough imports less total exports, fell 40 percent to $351 million.
For the first 11 months of 2013, U.S. polished diamond imports jumped 16 percent year on year to $21.166 billion, while polished exports increased by the same 16 percent margin to $17.825 billion. Net polished imports rose 13 percent to $3.341 billion.
U.S. rough imports for the first 11 months of the year rose slightly by 3 percent to $470 million, while rough exports dropped 10 percent to $267 million, leaving net rough imports up 30 percent to $203 million.
The net diamond account for the first 11 months of 2013 grew 14 percent to $3.544 billion.
