Press Release: The Gemmological Association (Gem-A) of Great Britain’s The Journal of Gemmology is unveiling plans to expand the publication’s frequency and coverage in 2014.  With the support of the Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF, the journal will be printed quarterly (rather than once per year) with a broader range content available to readers. Plans for the revamped journal also include an updated design and a more rigorous peer-review process, with the addition of several new associate editors.
The journal will continue to publish high-quality peer-reviewed feature articles describing cutting-edge laboratory studies and field research, while also introducing new sections that provide readers with learning opportunities, announcements of new technological developments, tips on practical gemology, conference reports and more.
Discussing future plans for the journal, the editor-in-chief, Brendan Laurs, commented, “We aim to deliver a wider variety of high-quality content of interest to practicing  gemologists, researchers and enthusiasts. A balance of regular columns, occasional sections and feature articles will deliver useful information and informative insights that will increase readers’ knowledge, effectiveness and enjoyment of their gemological pursuits.”
Laurs stressed how this is “just the start” of improvements readers can expect to see. With the purchase of a new premises for Gem-A’s headquarters and the celebration of the Gemmology Diploma’s 100-year anniversary spurring an impetus for progress within Gem-A, Laurs believes “future changes will re-affirm The Journal of Gemmology’s place as the premier publication of the international gemological community.”
