Violence Displaces 400K Residents in the DRC

RAPAPORT... Over 400,000 residents have been displaced due to renewed violence in the Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to the United Nations (UN). More than 600 homes in 11 villages have been destroyed since October in the area between the towns of Pweto, Mitwaba and Manono, known as the ''Triangle of Death,'' according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The attacks are usually carried out by rebel group Mayi-Mayi Katanga.
“All armed groups must stop their activities and allow humanitarian access to the main victims of this tragedy, the civilian populations,” urged Martin Kobler, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s special representative for the DRC and head of the UN Mission in the country (MONUSCO).
Last month, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) reached a truce with the M23, which had been largely responsible for a year of violence in the region, and according to OCHA, that round of strife displaced around 2.9 million people. The UN stressed the importance of a viable political solution to put an end to this new round of violence in the region.
