RAPAPORT... Rio Tinto reported that its annual pink diamond tender of rare pink and red diamonds from the Argyle mine in Australia achieved the highest average price per carat since the tender began 30 years ago.

While the company does not reveal bids and total values, it reported that overall prices more than tripled since the year 2000. The tender also saw a record number of 600 bids from 10 countries for the 54 lots on offer.

The most valuable diamond in the 2014 collection was a radiant-cut, 1.21-carat, fancy red diamond named the Argyle Cardinal, which sold to one of the company's exclusive retailers, Glenn Bakker Jewels, for an undisclosed amount.

“This red diamond is of exceptional rarity and as its custodian I am humbled to be a part of its incredible journey that spans more than 1.6 billion years. It gives me the rarest of opportunities to develop a creation that will dignify its place in Australian history,”  Glenn Bakker said.

In its 30-year history, only 13 fancy red diamonds have been offered at Argyle tenders, with only three larger than one carat.
