RAPAPORT... Mountain Province Diamonds said it expects production at its
new Gahcho Kué mine in Canada to start in the third quarter. The company had
previously only given a scheduled start date of the second
half of the year.
The miner, a 49-percent participant in the project with De
Beers Canada, achieved “mechanical completion” of the primary crusher and said
commissioning of the process plant continues to progress “well.”
The specific timing within the third quarter will depend on
progress with the remaining commissioning.
“Key areas of focus are finalization of commissioning of the
process plant, remaining earthworks, pre-stripping and mining of kimberlite, as
well as preparations for operational readiness,” said Patrick Evans, Mountain
Province’s chief executive officer.
Mountain Province has concluded all the necessary contract
arrangements to be in a position to receive, sort and sell its share of diamond
production from the new mine, the company said. The company appointed Mark
Pearton as manager of diamond operations and Elizabeth Swanson as manager of
diamond analysis. Both have “considerable” experience working at Rio Tinto
Diamonds.
The number of permanent staff at the mine is 290, including
91 experienced employees transferred
when De Beers stopped work at its Snap Lake mine.
