RAPAPORT... India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC)
is planning to develop the nation’s first industrial park to improve standards
and bring manufacturers under one roof.
The dedicated zone in Mumbai will enable small-scale jewelry
industry members to manufacture plain gold and studded jewelry at a single
venue, the GJEPC said.
The “first of its kind” jewelry industrial park in the
country will offer top-of-the-range technology to improve efficiency and
work culture, the GJEPC added. The nation’s Ministry of Commerce encouraged the
trade body to pursue the idea in line with other industrial zones in India such
as in the software, leather and textile sectors.
“A need has been envisaged to integrate the SME [small- and
medium-sized enterprise] manufacturers of handmade plain gold and studded jewelry
under one roof, especially that of Mumbai and the state of Maharashtra,” the
trade body said.
The GJEPC has already initiated discussions with the
Government of Maharashtra, the state of which Mumbai is the capital. Indications
show the prospects for rolling out the project are encouraging, the council
added. A presentation is scheduled for August 7 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre
at Goregaon in Mumbai, targeting members of the plain gold or studded jewelry
industry.
