RAPAPORT... Amazon sold 10,451 carats of diamonds this holiday
season, reporting that overall sales hit record levels during the period.
The online retailer said its diamond sales were equivalent in volume terms
to six and a half Russian Kokoshnik tiaras, the headgear worn by Queen
Elizabeth II. Customers bought 2.5 million watches,
equivalent to one timepiece every 1.5 seconds, a grizzly bear’s
weight in gold and the weight of a rhinoceros in silver.
While Amazon did not release sales figures, it claimed
the season had been its “best ever” with strong sales of Echo, its smart
voice-controlled speaker, and its more compact version, Echo Dot. Mobile
shopping was buoyant, with more than 72 percent of Amazon global customers using a mobile device for shopping this holiday.
