Sarine to Bar Patent-Violators’ US Shipments

RAPAPORT... Sarine Technologies is attempting to block US imports of polished
diamonds that it alleges were produced in violation of the company’s
intellectual property.
Sarine has notified US trade organizations and major importers,
dealers and retailers that it intends to “file actions” to prevent shipments of
such stones into the US, the company said in a recent statement.
In July, the Israel-based firm said it was suing a “group of
unscrupulous businessmen,” claiming they had infringed on intellectual property
rights relating to Sarine’s inclusion-mapping technology for rough diamonds, as
well as its Advisor software for rough-diamond planning. Israeli authorities
later arrested three foreign nationals in the case, and the suspects are now
awaiting criminal prosecution for allegedly attempting to get Sarine employees to
sell them the company’s trade secrets, the technology supplier said.
The alleged patent- and copyright infringement, which Sarine
claims took place in India, contributed to a 13% drop in the company’s revenue
in the second quarter, it argued last month.
“It should be noted that if such infringement is found,
enforcement might also involve the seizure of goods by US Customs and Border
Protection,” Sarine said.
Illicit exploitation of intellectual property rights by
“less than ethical” industry members should “meet with zero tolerance” in all
countries where those rights are protected by law, said David Block, Sarine’s
CEO.
