RAPAPORT... Christie’s New York will hold its spring sale of magnificent jewels on April 16, offering more than 250 jewels in a two-session sale at Rockefeller Center. The auction house expects to achieve a sale total of more than $50 million. Christie's will offer important colorless and colored diamonds, including a pair (22.60 carats and 22.31 carats) of circular-cut D, internally flawless diamond ear pendants with a presale estimate of $7 million to $10 million.
A 40.43-carat, D, potentially flawless oval-cut diamond ring (pictured) with a presale estimate of $5.8 million to $7.8 million and a 50.05-carat, D, flawless Briolette-cut diamond with a presale estimate of $5.5 million to $7.5 million round out the top lots. Rahul Kadakia, the head of jewelry for Christie’s Americas and Switzerland, said, “Our April 16 auction in New York includes a magnificent selection of important diamonds, rare colored gems and superb signed jewels. From the Collection of Riki and Jerome Shaw, offered to raise a very significant amount of money for animal rescue, the beautiful jewelry collection of Kathleen and Martin Field and a historic emerald and diamond brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels, to the two rare colored diamond rings by JAR, the sale offers jewels to the taste of every collector. Going into the spring jewelry season, Christie’s is proud to present collectors the very best jewelry at our sales worldwide.”  Shaw has become a leading advocate for animal rights and rescue in the U.S. and through her personal engagement, countless dogs have been rescued from puppy mills, unscrupulous breeders and being euthanized. Proceeds from the entire collection of the Shaws will benefit cage‐free shelters in the continued fight against animal cruelty. One lot is a 6.10-carat, rectangular-cut fancy intense pink diamond ring (pictured) by Harry Winston with a presale estimate of $4 million to $6 million. Secondly, a 6.25-carat, Burmese ruby and diamond ring is offered for $1 million to $1.5 million and a 5.17-carat, rectangular-cut fancy gray-blue diamond ring will be offered with a presale estimate of $800,000 to $1.2 million.
The two rings by JAR at this New York sale are as equally imaginative and unique as they are rich in history, according to Christie's. Lot 95 is a historic 2.49-carat, old mine-cut, fancy yellowish green diamond that was first recorded as the engagement ring of Countess Eliza to Count Zygmunt Krasinski, one of Poland’s greatest Romantic poets. This lot is priced to sell for between $300,000 and $500,000. Furthermore, a 15.75-carat, oval-cut fancy intense yellow diamond by JAR has a presale estimate of $500,000 to $700,000 and it formerly sold in the Jewels of Hope Auction from the collection of Lily Safra. Christie’s will also present more than 60 signed jewels by Suzanne Belperron, René Boivin, Bulgari, Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, David Webb and Harry Winston, among others.
