RAPAPORT... Black Friday is expected to be the busiest shopping day of the year by both customer visits and sales dollars, according to research by retail analytics provider ShopperTrak.

November 27, the day after Thanksgiving Day this year in the U.S., is the traditional day on which retailers offer promotions. The second busiest day by both measures is Super Saturday, this year December 19, the last Saturday before Christmas.

Third-placed by number of shopper visits is December 26, the day after Christmas. In 2014, Super Saturday topped ShopperTrak’s ranking for sales dollars.

The rise of Black Friday was down to the dominance of the price-conscious shopper who prefers to shop earlier, according to a statement released by the research group October 20.

The early Hanukkah, which begins 10 days sooner this year than in 2014, will also result in more November sales at the expense of December, it predicted in the statement.

Kevin Kearns, chief revenue officer at ShopperTrak, said in the statement: "This year, there are a number of retailers that are choosing to remain closed on Thanksgiving, and this will complement current trends and return Black Friday to the top spot for both sales and shopper visits.”

Kearns added: “While our rankings illustrate the most impactful days of the holiday season, it's important that retailers don't lose sight of the other days. As we saw in 2014, a significant portion of sales are generated throughout the entire holiday season, and it's vital that retailers optimize operations and marketing in order to make the most of each and every day.”
