RAPAPORT... Lloyd Jaffe, a long-serving leader of the US diamond industry, passed away late last week at age 90.

Jaffe was a founder of the now-defunct American Diamond Industry Association (ADIA), serving as its chairman for 16 years until his retirement in 1998. During his tenure, he devoted the ADIA’s efforts to serving diamond merchants, media and the public as “a voice of the industry,” Rapaport News wrote at the time.

“Throughout his many years in our industry, Lloyd was dedicated and tireless in his many leadership roles to seek and to promote the highest levels of honesty and integrity throughout the worldwide diamond industry,” said Ronnie van der Linden, chairman of the Diamond Manufacturers & Importers Association of America (DMIA), of which Jaffe was an officer.

At the ADIA, Jaffe compiled one of the industry’s most extensive collections of information and data resources. In the pre-Internet era, he devoted countless volunteer hours to learning where and how to obtain vital statistics pertaining to the trade, then making sense of that data and explaining it in clear and understandable terms, van der Linden recalled.

“We owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude,” he added.

Jaffe is survived by his wife, Solange Rosenblum Jaffe, and by his son, daughter, sister and grandchildren.
