leadership role was a natural transition for Ms. Brodie, who joined the magazine
publishing powerhouse after eight years as Global Director of Communications for
world-renowned jeweler Harry Winston, Inc.
In that position, Ms. Brodie has been
credited with expanding the reach and image of the old-world brand to appeal to
a younger clientele. Ms. Brodie has become a recognized media personality through
numerous appearances on entertainment, business and lifestyle programs discussing
various topics such as business trends, luxury living and celebrity style.

Prior to joining Harry Winston
in 1997, Ms. Brodie spent four years as a partner at award winning advertising agency
J. Walter Thompson, where she managed the

on behalf of De Beers Consolidated Mines. Not just limited to diamonds, Ms. Brodie has helped build luxury
and beauty brands such as Clairol, Revlon Professional Products, Maybelline, Henry
Dunay Designs and Gucci Timepieces. Ms. Brodie’s personal interests involve
philanthropy, gemology and international travel.
She maintains positions on the committees of several prominent charities
including The Boy’s and Girl’s Club, The Crohn’s & Colitis
Foundation of America and the Food Allergy Initiative.

Dr. Michael E. Conroy is a former academic, funder, advocate
and analyst of the emergence of new systems for corporate social and environmental
accountability. For the past fifteen years he has been at the forefront of
the movement to build systems that encourage and reward higher standards of corporate
accountability in a wide range of industries, from sustainable forestry and sustainable
tourism and ecotourism to certified Fair Trade, and responsible mining. Building
on a 25-year academic career as a Professor of Economics at the University of Texas
at Austin and later as a Senior Research Scholar and Senior Lecturer at Yale University,
Dr. Conroy has taught about, researched, and written about the “certification
revolution” that has created unprecedented transformation of global corporate
practices on social and environmental fronts over the past 15 years. He has also
spent a dozen years outside academia in the philanthropic world, first at the Ford
Foundation (nine years) and then with the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (three years),
building new modes of corporate accountability through support for these same certification
systems. His academic record includes the first courses at the University of Texas
on the Global Economics of Sustainable Development, a half-dozen academic books,
and scores of refereed professional publications. His latest book, published
in September 2007, is Branded! How the ‘Certification Revolution’
is Transforming Global Corporations, (Vancouver: New Society Publishers). The book won a Silver Medal in the 2008 Axiom Business
Books Awards, qualifying as “one of the two best books on Business Ethics
published in English in 2007.”

Annabel Short is Head of Program with Business & Human Rights Resource Centre,
where she has worked since 2003. The Resource Centre is an international non-profit
that monitors companies’ human rights impacts (positive and negative).
It has offices in New York and London, and regional researchers based in India,
Senegal, South Africa and Ukraine. The Resource Centre invites companies to
respond to allegations of misconduct, to encourage them to address concerns and
ensure its coverage is fair. Special portals on the Centre’s website
include “Business, Conflict and Peace”, “Corporate Legal Accountability”,
and “Tools & Guidance”. Annabel’s work includes
conducting research, overseeing program activities and representing the Centre at
a wide range of events. Prior to the Resource Centre, Annabel worked
for the consultancy Context where she advised multinationals such as HP, Unilever
and Vodafone on their social and environmental strategies and reporting. She
has also worked as a freelance journalist, writing for the Ecologist, Ethical Corporation,
Geographical magazine and other publications. Annabel has academic
qualifications in international human rights law(certificate, London School of Economics),
international development (MSc, London University) journalism (Postgraduate Diploma,
City University) and languages (MA in Spanish and French, Edinburgh University). Annabel
lives in New York City.
Peter
Singer

Peter Singer was born in Melbourne, Australia, on July
6, 1946, and educated at the University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford. He
has taught at the University of Oxford, La Trobe University and Monash University.
Since 1999 he has been Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics in the University Center
for Human Values at Princeton University. From 2005, he has also held the part-time
position of Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne, in the Centre for
Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics. Peter Singer first became well-known
internationally after the publication of Animal Liberation in 1975. Since
then he has written, co-authored, edited or co-edited more than 40 other books,
including Practical Ethics; The Expanding Circle; How Are We to Live?, Rethinking
Life and Death, The Ethics of What We Eat (with Jim Mason) and most
recently, The Life You Can Save. His works have appeared in more
than 20 languages. He is the author of the major article on Ethics in the current
edition of the Encylopaedia Britannica. Two collections of his writings
have been published: Writings on an Ethical Life, which he edited, and Unsanctifying
Human Life, edited by Helga Kuhse, and also two collections of critical
essays, with responses: Singer and Critics, edited by Dale Jamieson, and
Peter Singer Under Fire, edited by Jeffrey Schaler. Outside academic life,
Peter Singer is a member of the Leadership Council of Oxfam America, a Vice-President
of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (UK),and a member
of the Advisory Board of GiveWell.net. In 2005 Time magazine named him
one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Peter Singer is married, with
three daughters and three grandchildren. His recreations, apart from reading
and writing, include hiking and surfing.
