Sotheby's NY Jewels Auction Highlights Important Diamonds

RAPAPORT... Sotheby’s first autumn jewelry auction on September 24 in New York offers pieces from both estate and private collections, and includes a 19.51-carat, E, VVS2, type IIa emerald-cut diamond ring by Harry Winston from the family of real estate developer and philanthropist George Rothman. A public exhibition starting four days earlier in their York Avenue galleries will showcase all available pieces.
"This [Rotham] diamond (pictured left) – one of several important white diamonds on offer by private sellers this September – is the caliber of stone that is sure to generate early excitement in the global jewelry market this auction season,” said Gary Schuler, the director of Sotheby’s jewelry department in New York. “The strength of our September sale lies in the remarkable breadth of property that is fresh-to-the-market." The ring has a presale estimate of $1.2 million to $1.8 million.
Also available in the auction are jewels from the Alex & Elisabeth Lewyt collection, including custom-designed and period pieces by French jewelers such as Schlumberger, Suzanne Belperron, Van Cleef & Arpels and the abstracted naturalistic designs of René Boivin, such as a puppy dog brooch. Sotheby's spring art sales contained work from Lewyt as well.
Additional auction highlights include a platinum and diamond double-clip pendant-Brooch, by Schlumberger, which is set with marquise-shaped diamonds weighing 5.22 and 5.28 carats, both E, VS1 and with a presale estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.
The 18-karat gold, blackened gold, and colored diamond, diamond and ruby dog brooch (pictured right) by Boivin has a presale estimate of $70,000 to $90,000. 
Jewels from the Rothmans feature pieces that are signed by Bulgari, David Webb and Van Cleef & Arpels and include a second diamond ring by Harry Winston, featuring a 15.10-carat, D, VVS2, potentially internally flawless, type IIa pear, set in platinum and estimate to fetch between $1.25 million and $1.75 million.
A 9.77-carat, D, internally flawless platinum and diamond ring from the ''Property of a Lady, Texas'' collection is estimated to sell for $800,000 to $1.2 million.
