U.S. Polished Diamond Exports Surpass Imports in August

RAPAPORT... Polished diamond imports in the U.S. during August jumped 29.9 percent year on year to $1.667 billion, while the average price per carat rose 11 percent to $1,585. However, polished exports surged 32.6 percent, surpassing imports by value at $1.695 billion, leaving an import deficit of $28 million compared with net imports of $5 million one year ago.

Rough diamond imports in August declined 20 percent year on year to $32 million, while rough exports almost doubled to $39 million. The U.S. carried a net rough import deficit of $7 million in August and a net diamond account in the red at $35 million compared with net imports of $27 million in 2012.

For the first eight months of 2013, the U.S. imported $15.389 billion worth of polished diamonds and exported $13.261 billion worth of goods, leaving net imports of $2.13 billion. Rough imports of $330 million and rough exports of $193 million produced net imports of $136 million. The net diamond account for the January through August period has risen 6.3 percent year on year to $2.266 billion.
