Overstock.com Inc. surveyed 800 consumers in the U.S. and found that this year, 45 percent of couples simply plan an old-fashioned and simple Valentine's Day date with their significant other. Additionally, 62 percent plan to express their Valentine's Day wishes on a hand-written card, while 27 percent will text message their thoughts and 15 percent will use social media to convey their feelings. Of those in the survey who did choose jewelry as a gift choice this year, 52 percent of women preferred earrings, about the same percentage as the survey revealed in 2013. Necklaces ran a close second place and bracelets were in third. Engagement rings did not make the top five jewelry choices this year, according to Overstock. Sixty-seven percent of men who chose jewelry as a Valentine's Day gift selected watches. "Jewelry is one of Overstock's strongest categories," said Overstock.com's co-president, Dave Nielsen. "We offer a wide assortment of discounted earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches and rings. All of our unique styles and precious stones, from diamonds to pearls, always satisfy our customers' needs – especially for Valentine's Day."
