RAPAPORT... The Singapore Jewellery & Gem Fair will take place at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre from October 23 to 26, 2014, with more 200 exhibitors occupying 10,000 square meters of exhibit space. Show organizer UBM created country pavilions for Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, Thailand and the U.S.

Design awards will be presented on October 23 to recognize young jewelry designers for their talent under the theme "The Most Important Day of Life," where designers  were required to create a piece of jewelry for the most important day of his or her life in three different periods -- the past, the present and the future.  Anastasia Antonovich of  Moscow State University of Design and Technology will take first prize for "Past,"  Kevin Koh of Nanyang Polytechnic was the winner for "Present" and Carla Hesita of University of The Philippines Diliman was chosen as the winner for "Future."

In support of emerging talent,  local design schools will be able to showcase their students' jewelry creations at the fair. In addition,  show organizers scheduled seminars and introductory workshops from  the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), and Jewellery Design and Management International School (JDMIS).

"Talent is important to the sustenance of the jewelry industry, and we are committed to providing young and aspiring designers with avenues that will allow them to realize their potential. Young designers play an important role in bringing the industry to the next level by contributing fresh perspectives to jewelry design, expanding the use of materials, developing creative techniques and pushing the boundaries of creativity," said Paul Wan, the managing director of UBM Media.

Visitors to the Singapore Jewellery & Gem Fair may also attend the Milan Image & Design Art Fair, which is also taking place at the exhibition center,  at a 50 percent admission discount.
