RAPAPORT... Consumers in the U.S. planned to spend an average of $186 on the day after Christmas, 3.1 percent less than the $192 they spent in 2014, according to the American Express Spending & Saving Tracker.

However, the number of people who said they expected to shop on December 26 increased to 66 percent of those polled, American Express said in a statement December 17.

December 26 “has arguably emerged as its own shopping holiday, outranking the number of people who expected to shop on Black Friday and Cyber Monday,” the statement said. Only 45 percent said they expected to shop on Black Friday and 47 percent on Cyber Monday.

Marketing performance company Ebiquity, which conducted the survey, interviewed a sample of 1,508 adults in the U.S., including an “affluent” demographic defined as those with an annual household income of $100,000 or more. The poll was carried out from November 17 to 19.

Some 38 percent of people surveyed said they planned to buy items for themselves in the post-holiday sales on December 26, compared with 34 percent last year. A quarter said they would use gifts cards they receive from others, down from 26 percent in 2014. The proportion using December 26 to buy things for people on their holiday list increased by two percentage points to 14 percent.
