RAPAPORT... A designer producing his first diamond-focused collection won the Couture award for high-end diamond jewelry on Sunday in Las Vegas.

Brazilian-born Fernando Jorge received the accolade for the “Best in Diamonds Above $20,000” category at the Couture Design Awards. The ceremony took place during the Couture show, a luxury jewelry design exhibition that preceded this week’s JCK Las Vegas fair.

“This was my first adventure with diamonds, and therefore I feel very, very honored to receive this award,” Jorge (pictured) said in his acceptance speech.

Jorge had used diamonds before, but this was his first collection that centered on the stones, he later told Rapaport News.

“I entered the earrings that won the Couture Design Award into the diamond category because I didn’t want to shy away from expressing that this collection is a diamond collection,” he said.

This year’s event saw the inaugural award for men’s jewelry, which went to Switzerland-based manufacturer Furrer Jacot (design pictured, below right), the show’s organizers said Monday. It also featured the Cindy Edelstein Award, in memory of the eponymous jewelry consultant and author, who died last year. Edelstein’s daughter, Remy, presented the accolade to British designer Stephen Webster.
