Press Release: The Panjikar Gem Research & Tech Institute in Pune organized a free seminar on how to easily identify treated yellow sapphires as part of the group's  ongoing outreach to former students and trade members. The students have formed a new organization called “PANGEMS.” Dr. Jayshree Panjikar welcomed them to the event and took them through a PowerPoint presentation on yellow sapphires.

In the recent years, the colored-stone market has been flooded with treated material, especially treated yellow sapphires. Natural yellow sapphire, which is generally sold in the local market as “Pukhraj,” has become a common stone to be recommended by astrologers.

Added to the fact that deep yellow shades of untreated material command a high value has led to the advent of a wide range of treatments for yellow sapphires to improve their color and clarity.

Several treatments are done, such as heat treatment, irradiation, flux-treatment, glass-filling, beryllium diffusion treatment and low-temperature prolonged treatments, which gave rise to very attractive shades of yellow. Today, synthetic yellow sapphires are treated to imitate the inclusions seen in treated-natural gemstones. Although sophisticated instruments can detect all the treatments the seminar was arranged for the gemstone dealers and new entrepreneurs who have limited access to high-tech instruments.

Emphasis was placed upon  how to identify the natural, treated, synthetic and the synthetic treated yellow sapphires with a mere 10x lens. Participants also had the pleasure of seeing some rare gems such as nuumite, lodolite, larimar, rainbow obsidian and many other unusual stones.
