RAPAPORT... The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is conducting a comprehensive  environmental assessment on Stornoway Diamond Corporation's Renard diamond project in Quebec and opened the public commenting period. Stornoway is proposing to develop  the diamond mine on its Foxtrot property in the James Bay region of Northern Quebec, which involves the development of the mine and local infrastructure, such as open pits, shafts, mine adits, a mill, kimberlite tailings impoundments, an explosives building, a facility for the extraction of ground water, a housing complex, an airstrip and associated facilities.

After this public comment period, the Minister of the Environment will take into consideration the comprehensive study report along with comments received from the public and Aboriginal groups and issue an environmental assessment decision statement.

As a matter of practice, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.

The comprehensive study includes the Agency's conclusions and recommendations regarding the implementation of mitigation measures and whether or not the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects and can be found here: www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca registry reference number 55169.
