RAPAPORT... Russian scientists have discovered a new type of diamond in the frozen lava of the Tolbachik volcano in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, according to a statement by the Russian Science Ministry.
The diamonds were formed by volcanic gases under tremendous pressure and crystallized under the influence of electrical current discharged by lightning, RT said, citing the ministry statement.
The Russia-based news outlet said that while the gems look similar to synthetically produced diamonds, they differ in certain geological and mineralogical characteristics. It noted that Tolbachik diamonds were not formed in liquefied rock magma, as is the case with diamonds recovered from kimberlite pipes.
