Birks Shows Canada Pride with Renard Line

 RAPAPORT... Canadian jewelry retailer Birks Group has partnered with
rough producer Stornoway Diamond Corporation to sell stones from the new Renard
mine in Quebec.
Birks launched a showcase of the first 200 diamonds from the
mine at its Montreal flagship store on Thursday. These polished diamonds, which
Birks has put up for sale, will also go on display in its Laval, Ste Foy and Ottawa
locations in the coming weeks, the jeweler said.
The diamonds range from 0.18 carats to 10.01 carats and are available
either loose, or mounted in rings, pendants or earrings. Each stone comes with
a Birks Quebec certificate of authenticity and a unique serial number to
confirm its origin. The diamonds are also engraved with a microscopic maple
leaf, as well as with the fleur de lis symbol that appears on the flag of
Quebec.
Production at Renard began in October and reached commercial
levels on January 1. Since the project’s launch, Stornoway has sold 498,039
carats of rough at an average price of $83 per carat, the miner said last week.
Birks, headquartered in Montreal, says it offers exclusively
Canadian diamonds for its engagement rings and claims that all its domestically
sourced diamonds are traceable from the mine to the finished product. In
2010, the company was the first jeweler to offer diamonds from De Beers’ Victor
mine in Ontario.
“We’re very proud to unveil the first certified diamonds
from a mine in Quebec,” said Birks CEO Jean-Christophe Bedos. “As a
Canadian leader in the jewelry market, we are convinced they will appeal to our
customers, who are increasingly interested in knowing the provenance and
traceability of precious stones.”
