RAPAPORT... The Diamond Development Initiative (DDI) retained Patricia Syvrud, the founder and president of Joia Consulting LLC, to lead a program development effort for the Friends of DDI.  The new  program will allow jewelry retailers, designers, manufacturers and suppliers to support DDI's work on the ground in mining communities, and demonstrate to their own customers  that the diamond industry is making a positive impact on the lives of those who mine diamonds by artisanal methods.

''I am honored to be able to work with an international group that plays such a unique development role in the artisanal diamond mining communities and in the lives of the miners,'' stated Syvrud.

DDI's executive director, Dorothée Gizenga, said, ''We have high hopes that Patricia will be able to harness engagement from the industry members to the benefit of both artisanal miners and of consumers seeking ethical jewelry.''

The Friends of DDI campaign will officially launch in early 2012. DDI brings the jewelry industry, non-governmental organizations and governments together in a common effort that aims to ensure that diamonds are an engine for development. DDI complements the Kimberley Process by fostering the integration of development solutions alongside the global body's regulatory requirements.
