RAPAPORT... The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and the Gemmological Institute of India (GII) opened a diamond detection and resource center (DDRC) at the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) on December 6.

The DDRC will provide companies with the ability to test any parcel of diamonds to  ensure that synthetic diamonds and natural diamonds are not mixed together, therefore securing transparency in the diamond pipeline. The center will also offer services to diamond companies, including technical support and on-the-job training  in detection methods.

“The rapid action demanded of the GII was in part driven by the anxiety felt by the trade regarding reports and certain incidences of undisclosed mixing of lab-grown diamonds into diamond parcels,” said  Vipul Shah, the chairman of the GJEPC. “We at GJEPC condemn any effort of fudging the difference by mixing of the two products. We reassure the industry that we are on the job and will be shortly sending the draft of a declaration which has been worked out with all prominent trade bodies of the world.”

GJEPC formed a natural diamond monitoring committee in cooperation with  trade associations such as the BDB, GJF and MDMA to formulate strategies and ensure the segregation of natural and man-made diamonds. Meanwhile, the GII has begun to educate people about lab-grown diamonds through seminars in Surat, Mumbai, Coimbatore and Cambay. The institute is planning to hold seminars in other diamond centers, as well.
