IIa Technologies Denies Infringement of Element Six Patents, Vows to Fight Claims

diamond producer IIa Technologies denied it infringed on patents owned by a De
Beers company and vowed to “challenge the validity” of the patents.
Pledging to defend itself against claims
from De Beers synthetics business Element Six, Singapore-based IIa said it
is a research-led company committed to innovation and has been awarded several
patents worldwide resulting from its in-house processes and products.
“We believe we are not in any way infringing on Element Six’s
claims,” Vishal Mehta, IIa’s chief executive officer, said in a statement
January 21.
“In addition, we will challenge the validity
of their patents. IIa Technologies has entered its appearance in the High Court
in Singapore and will vigorously defend itself. We will keep our company’s
focus on the development and growth of diamonds for our customers. We would
like to express our appreciation for the customers and partners that have stood
by us and re-affirm our continued support to them to build a healthy
grown-diamond ecosystem worldwide.”
Earlier, the De Beers subsidiary alleged in a statement January 12 that IIa was “exploiting Element Six patents for commercial gain,” potentially in both the industrial
and jewelry sectors.
The patents in question related to the production of materials for optical uses
such as infra-red spectroscopy and high-power laser optics, Element Six said.
