RAPAPORT... Fancy blue diamond prices outperformed their yellow and pink counterparts in the first quarter, according to the Fancy Color Diamond Index.

Prices of fancy blue gems rose 1.7 percent sequentially in the three months compared with a 1.8-percent drop seen in fancy yellow stones. Fancy pink diamonds nudged up 0.3 percent, the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF) said.

“Mine supply of highly coveted fancy vivid blues and pinks continues to be scarce, while demand for this category continues to grow,” said Eden Rachminov, chairman of the FCRF advisory board. “This trend is likely to continue well into 2016 as dealers are holding firm on prices in view of the demand-supply imbalance.”

Overall, fancy-color prices were down 0.1 percent over the previous quarter. In the same period, the RapNet Diamond Index (RAPI™)for 1-carat, colorless, GIA-graded diamonds rose 1.4 percent.
