KP Chair Makes Symbolic Visit to CAR

RAPAPORT... Ahmed Bin Sulayem has become the first sitting Kimberley
Process chairman to visit the Central African Republic (CAR), embarking on the trip
after the country recently resumed diamond exports.
“My visit here this week is to see for myself not only what
progress has been made at senior level, but what it’s like on the ground now
that the country has turned a corner,” said Bin Sulayem, the United Arab
Emirates-based chair of the KP for 2016.
“The people here are reliant on this industry and the
government is determined to work with the Kimberley Process at every level, to
ensure they get it right, from the people’s perspective as well as from the
government’s.”
Bin Sulayem (pictured, left) met with Faustin-Archange Touadera, President of
the CAR (right), and Leopold Mboli Fratran, the newly appointed Minister of Mines. The tour
also involved visits to townships and remote villages, including the diamond
areas of Carnot, Boda and Nola.
Diamond exports from the CAR resumed earlier
this month under a Kimberley Process mandate following a three-year moratorium.
“We look forward to fully integrating ourselves back into
the international marketplace as soon as possible and thank the efforts of Mr Bin Sulayem and this team for making this happen,” President Touadera said.
