RAPAPORT... Rescue teams are hunting for nine workers at Alrosa’s Mir mine following a flood, Reuters reported Friday.

Emergency services brought 133 mining staff to the surface out of the 142 workers who were inside the underground mine in Yakutia when the incident happened, the report said. An additional nine miners were preparing to go down into the site at the time of the flood.

On Friday, water flooded into the mine shaft — the tunnel that gives access to the underground deposit — from an open-pit mine above it, Reuters said. So far, there have been no reports of casualties and no word from Alrosa on the likelihood of the missing miners being rescued, the report said.

Production at the mine has been halted, Reuters cited Alrosa as saying. The operation yielded 2 million carats in the first half of 2017, up 29% from a year ago, accounting for 11% of Alrosa’s total output for the period, according to a recent company report.

Alrosa did not immediately respond to Rapaport News’ requests for comment outside of working hours.
