IGI Grades Record Blue Lab-Grown Diamond

RAPAPORT... The International Gemological Institute (IGI) recently graded a 150.42-carat, blue synthetic diamond that ranks as the largest lab-grown rough ever, the organization claimed.
UK-based biotechnology company Meylor Global produced the type IIb stone using the High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) method. It also created a 141.58-carat grey that went to IGI for grading, the Belgium-headquartered laboratory said last week.
“The acceleration of technology in the lab-grown diamond sector is significant,” said IGI’s senior director of education, John Pollard. “We’re seeing new benchmarks from the world’s most advanced producers in jewelry applications and beyond.”
The new stones beat the previous record, which was also set by Meylor, IGI noted. In 2020, the company created a 115.65-carat, black lab-grown diamond as part of its “World’s Largest Black Diamonds Project.” At the time, the company stated it was looking at creating a synthetic stone larger than 200 carats.
