Diamonds That Created a Buzz in 2019

RAPAPORT... It was another big year for big diamonds, with several stones that raked in big bucks, set records, or otherwise made headlines. These were the stones that caught our attention in 2019.
Biggest money makers
1. Big blue
In November, Petra Diamonds sold a 20.08-carat, type IIb, gem-quality blue diamond recovered at its Cullinan mine in South Africa for $14.9 million, or $742,032 per carat, the upper end of analysts’ estimates.
2. Magnificent jewel
A cut-cornered rectangular mixed-cut, 10.64-carat, fancy-vivid-purplish-pink, internally flawless diamond ring topped Sotheby’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels auction in October, selling for HKD 155.8 million ($19.9 million), or $1.9 million per carat.
3. Rock star
At Sotheby’s April sale in Hong Kong, the Manami Star, a rare oval brilliant-cut, 88.22-carat, D-color, type IIa, flawless diamond sold for $13.8 million, beating its high estimate of $12.7 million.
4. Lasting Legacy
Petra sold a 425-carat, D-color, type II, gem-quality diamond for just under $15 million in May. The Legacy of the Cullinan Diamond Mine was bought through a partnership between Dubai-based Stargems Group and Belgium-based Choron.
For the record
1. Colossal Constellation
In September, Nemesis International unveiled the emerald-shaped, 313-carat, VVS-clarity Constellation 1, the largest D-color polished stone in history. The diamond is one of a collection of eight stones cut from the 813-carat Constellation rough, which Nemesis bought in partnership with Swiss jeweler de Grisogono.
2. Lesedi La Rona’s largest
Another record-setting polished cut from a famous rough was the square emerald-cut, 302.37-carat, D-color Graff Lesedi La Rona. The diamond was unveiled by Graff in its collection of 67 polished stones cut from the 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona, and is the largest of its shape. If it turns out to be flawless, as expected, it would also be the largest D-flawless graded by the GIA.
3. Rare find
Sewelô, a 1,758-carat, near-gem-quality diamond unearthed at Lucara’s Karowe mine in April nabbed the title of largest rough stone ever found in Botswana, an honor previously held by the Lesedi La Rona.
4. Goodbye gift
After 35 years, Rio Tinto’s Argyle mine, set to close in the coming year, yielded a 28.84-carat stone named Argyle Octavia, the largest gem-quality white diamond in the mine’s history.
Earth-shattering finds
1. Living large
On the heels of the 1,758-carat Lucara diamond and the 425-carat stone from Petra, another Karowe stone took the next spot for largest diamond unearthed in 2019. A 375-carat, gem-quality stone was discovered iat the mine in September, together with a 123-carat rough.
2. Karowe carats
Lucara also found this year’s fourth-largest diamond, retrieving a 240-carat, “top-white” rough stone at Karowe in January.
3. White Russian
Alrosa recovered a 232.4-carat, gem-quality diamond with a slight yellowish tinge and several chips at its Udachnaya mine in October, the largest it has recovered in more than three years.
4. Culled from Cullinan
Petra discovered another stone over 200 carats, yielding a 209.9-carat, D-color, type II, gem-quality rough diamond from its Cullinan mine in April.
Attention seekers
1. Going Gaga
Actress and singer Lady Gaga served as Tiffany & Co.’s muse in 2019. In February, she wore a necklace featuring a cushion-cut, 128.54-carat yellow diamond and platinum necklace by the jeweler to the 91st Academy Awards show. The Tiffany Diamond, as it is known, originated in the Kimberley mines in South Africa, and was last seen on Audrey Hepburn at the publicity shoot for the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It was the first time the diamond had been worn at an awards-show red carpet.
2. Diamond dolls
In October, Alrosa revealed it had found a rough diamond containing another freely moving rough diamond encased inside it, similar to a Russian nesting doll. The “matryoshka” stone, which was identified during the sorting process at the miner’s Nyurba division, is the first of its kind in history, according to Alrosa.
3. Fish out of water
The Russian miner also touted a piece from its collection of unusual diamonds on Instagram in August, when it used a fish-shaped diamond it found in 2002 to help publicize its ecological work. Those efforts involved releasing hundreds of thousands of fish into the rivers of Yakutia.
