current Fairtrade practices, requirements of Fairtrade labeling, and upcoming Fairtrade
initiatives relating to diamonds and the jewelry industry.
Part 3 of 5 - Lourens Maré and Demos Takoulas talk about the jewelry industry in
South Africa and the hardships faced in their country which suffers from a 40% unemployment
rate among people ages 18-35. They also talk about development projects that are
taking historically disadvantaged individuals (HDIs) out of the townships and training
them in jewelry design and manufacturing.
Part 4 of 5 - Veronika Kohler from CASM (Communities and Small-scale Mining) conveys
the enormity of small-scale mining, and discusses the opportunities that fair trade
initiatives could provide for artisanal miners around the world
Part 5 of 5 - Tom Cushman shares his experiences in Madagascar with mining colored
gems and gold.
