RAPAPORT... Global diamond, jewelry and retail stocks underperformed this year as 76 percent of the listed companies tracked by the Rapaport Diamond Industry Stock Tracker declined in 2015.

Out of 50 stocks followed by Rapaport News, 38 fell between January 2 and 11 a.m. GMT on December 29, according to data compiled from Yahoo Finance.

The worst-hit region was the Far East, where all five tracked companies saw their share prices fall. Hong Kong jewelry retails Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Ltd. (-52 percent), Luk Fook Holdings (International) Ltd. (-45 percent) and Chow Sang Sang Holdings International Ltd. (-38 percent) all suffered heavy declines. While the losses reflect a general stock-market downturn in Hong Kong, the performance of these three stocks was worse than that of Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index, which dipped 7 percent since January 2.

Diamond technology firm Sarine Technologies Ltd. (-40 percent) and pawn shop ValueMax Group Limited (-26 percent), both listed in Singapore, suffered lesser but still significant drops.

U.S. retail stocks also took heavy hits, led by jewelry company Birks Group Inc., which tumbled 78 percent. Department store chain Macy's, Inc., fell 47 percent, while Charles & Colvard Ltd., which develops and markets moissanite, dived 42 percent. Overall, 10 out of 12 U.S. stocks declined, with only department store J.C. Penney (+7 percent) and online jewelry retailer Blue Nile Inc. (+2.2 percent) seeing a share-price increase. All 10 U.S. retail stocks fell more than the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which dipped 1.7 percent.

Seven out of 10 miners outside of the U.K. markets tracked by Rapaport News lost at least 13 percent, while True North Gems Inc. (+38 percent) and Stornoway Diamond Corporation (+35 percent) bucked the trend. Lucara Diamond Corp. (+4.1 percent) also rose after its stock rocketed in mid-November when the company discovered the second-largest diamond in history.

U.K. miners all declined except Stellar Diamonds plc, which skyrocketed 672 percent after anomalously rising more than 5,000 percent from a low base in early November. Diversified miners Anglo American plc (-75 percent) and Rio Tinto plc (-35 percent) dropped significantly amid a commodities slump, while Petra Diamonds Ltd. (-55 percent) and Firestone Diamonds plc (-48 percent) also nosedived, against a 4.3 percent drop in the U.K.’s FTSE 100 index.

European and Indian stocks were more mixed, with French luxury group LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA increasing 11 percent. Decliners included Swiss watchmaker Swatch Group (-22 percent), Swiss giant Compagnie Financière Richemont SA (+19 percent) and Italy’s Damiani SpA (-4.8 percent). French luxury group Kering SA slipped 0.9 percent.

India was even more mixed, with C.Mahendra Exports Ltd. slumping 90 percent and Classic Diamonds (India) Ltd. down 80 percent. However, Lypsa Gems & Jewelry Ltd. (+98 percent) and Goldiam International Ltd. (+80 percent) appreciated significantly. There were huge increases for Rajesh Exports Ltd. (+360 percent), whose stock grew fairly steadily through the year with a steeper increase in September, and Renaissance Jewellery Ltd. (+105 percent), which fluctuated throughout 2015 but surged since late October.
