RAPAPORT... An Art Deco Cartier bracelet set with 101 carats of Colombian emeralds sold for nearly three times its presale estimate at the New York Jewels Sale at Bonhams, garnering $3.2 million.

The piece, designed in 1926, came from the collection of American heiress Hélène Irwin Crocker Fagan, daughter of sugar baron William Irwin, Bonhams said Wednesday. It was originally expected to fetch $1.3 million at the May 24 sale.

Another Cartier item belonging to Fagan also surpassed its high price. The tiara, made in 1914 and set with an old European-cut, 8.25-carat diamond and natural pearls, garnered $586,275. A marquise brilliant-cut, 17.25-carat, H-color, VVS2-clarity diamond ring smashed its $550,000 high estimate, achieving $819,375.

Other notable items included a cushion mixed-cut, 8.17-carat Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring by Bailey Banks & Biddle, which went for $403,575, within its estimate, and a Tiffany & Co. yellow sapphire and diamond feather brooch. The second item, which was part of a group of jewels belonging to actress Bette Midler, sold for $40,695.

Meanwhile, a collection of jewelry from American heiress, socialite and philanthropist Charlotte Shultz was 100% sold. All 201 items on offer found buyers at the white-glove sale, including the top seller, a necklace by Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany, which sold for $529,575, triple its estimate.
