Crushed gemstones are the medium for artisans who create the Art Gems Collection from Artistry, Ltd. Working with gems — including rubies, amethysts, blue sapphires, jade, calcite and opal — that are crushed as finely as sand, artisans have created rings, pendants and jewelry boxes showcasing intricate styling. There are six designs: The Kiss, Mother & Child, Pink Lily, Tiger, Leopard and Warbler.

In a tribute to one of the first Hollywood jewelers, Elizabeth Irvine Bray has penned Paul Flato: Jeweler to the Stars. The 224-page, coffee-table book is filled with images of the jeweler’s work sourced from auction houses and private collections, as well as never-before-seen photographs from the Flato family archives, images of

Hollywood clients wearing his jewels, film stills, studio portraits and original drawings of the pieces. The fascinating life of Flato is also chronicled in the book. Author Bray is a former jewelry specialist with Christie’s. Based in Los Angeles, where she works as an appraiser and consultant, Bray is a graduate gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Going green just took on a new meaning with Takohl’s patent-pending Earth Ring, a wearable garden. A specially designed silver ring, with a foliage motif, comes with seeds to start a mini-garden within the center of the ring, allowing you to wear the greenery on your finger. When not being worn, the ring is stored in its own glass ecosphere. The mini-greenhouse creates the optimal climate for plants, showing how they generate oxygen and humidity. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of Earth Rings will be donated to environmental causes. Consumers can register their Earth Rings with Takohl to receive updates on new seed and flower developments.

Fabulous dresses and glamourous jewelry from some of the most talked-about women of the twentieth century are the heart of the “Notorious & Notable 20th Century Women of Style” exhibition organized by the Museum of the City of New York and the National Jewelry Institute. The jewelry on display comes from designers as varied as Van Cleef & Arpels, Raymond Yard, Schlumberger and Prince Dimitri. The women who wore the jewels and loaned them for the exhibition are just as eclectic and include socialites, businesswomen and stage personalities — Barbara Walters, Carolina Herrera, Marina Rust, Joan Crawford, Helena Rubenstein and Barbara Taylor Bradford, to name a few. The exhibition is on view at the Museum of the City of New York through January 3, 2011.

Couture partnered with IMG Mercedes Benz at this year’s Fashion Week for a fine jewelry exhibit. The exhibit, at the new New York Fashion Week Lincoln Center location, featured Couture jewelers Scott Kay, Gurhan, Paul Morelli, Yossi Harari, Andrea Fohrman, Sally Sohn and BAVNA.
