The board of directors at J.C. Penney Company Inc. replaced its CEO, Ron Johnson, with its former CEO, Myron E. (Mike) Ullman, III. Ullman, who led J.C. Penney for seven years before stepping down in November 2011, was also elected to the board. 

The Natural Color Diamond Association (NCDIA) announced that Jeffrey Post of Gem Platinum was elected president of its board of directors for 2013. Alan Bronstein of Aurora Gems and Sean Moore of Borsheims were elected vice presidents.

De Beers Diamond Jewellers named Jeanne Wang as its managing director for China. Wang spent the past 16 years with Chanel and most recently served as general manager of the Chanel fashion division in China.

Gem Diamonds appointed Michael Michael, its newly named CFO, to the company’s board. Since 2006, he has been closely involved with the financial aspects of the company’s listing, financial reporting, management accounting and tax related to its initial public offering (IPO), the company stated.

The Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) of India appointed Haresh Chamanbhai Soni as its chairman for the 2013 to 2015 period. Soni will replace Bachhraj Bamalwa and work alongside GJF’s newly appointed vice chairman, Manish Jain.

CIBJO released its special report updating the Coloured Gemstone Blue Book to include nomenclature used to describe gemstone treatments. Prepared by the CIBJO Coloured Stone Commission, headed by Nilam Alawdeen, the special report notes the addition of the qualifying terms “laboratory-grown” and “laboratory-created” as alternatives to the term “synthetic.” However, if there is no acceptable translation for these alternatives, CIBJO members in non-English speaking countries should only use the translation of the term “synthetic.”
   CIBJO also released its special report prepared by the CIBJO Ethics Commission, headed by Cecilia Gardner. The report lays out a program designed to advance the principles of corporate social responsibility in the jewelry and gemstone sectors.
   In the report, Gardner suggests that a Blue Book of general advertising standards may be a useful tool to assess the advertising used to promote the image of the industry and the products it sells. The report also proposes a complaint mechanism designed to combat misleading representations of products and the failure to comply with Blue Book standards.

The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) issued the trademark “Invented By Tolkowsky, Perfected By Tolkowsky” to Jean Paul Tolkowsky of Antwerp, with registration number 4312111. The trademark applies to jewelry containing diamonds and gemstones, loose diamonds and precious metals and their alloys.
   The USPTO also issued the trademark “You Just Know” to Lazare Kaplan International, with registration number 4312143.The trademark applies to diamonds and diamond jewelry.
   Merit Diamond Corporation was granted the trademark “Juno Lucina,” with registration number 4314589, for use in jewelry.

The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) certified three companies for having met the ethical social and environmental standards established by the RJC’s Member Certification System. The companies include Diamond Cutters Limited, a diamond trader based in a Sri Lanka; Rhys James Private Client Services, the Melbourne, Australia-based jewelry retailer; and Dhruv Star DMCC, the Dubai-based diamond trader. RJC also recertified Le Petit-Fils de L.-U. Chopard & Cie SA, the watch and jewelry manufacturer, headquartered in Geneva.

The International Consortium of Gem Testing Laboratories (ICGL) was established in India with the goal of sharing knowledge among independent laboratories around the world. The ICGL plans to create a data center with the latest information on gem treatments and advanced lab testing techniques.

The National Gem and Jewelry Testing Centre (NGTC) and the Gem and Jewelry Association of China (GAC) will host the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) Congress 2013 that will be held from May 12 through May 16. The Department of Commerce of Hunan Province and Changsha Municipal Peoples Government will join the two gem and jewelry trade organizations in hosting the conference. The news was confirmed in a meeting with all parties held in Beijing in March.

ENDIAMA, the National Diamond Company of the Republic of Angola, is organizing the Angolan Diamond Centenary Conference 2013 to be held in Luanda on June 20 and 21, 2013. The conference aims to highlight the accomplishments of Angola in the diamond industry and emphasize the potential of Angola’s territory still to be prospected, estimated at 60 percent.

In honor of Earth Day, Gemesis Diamond Company announced its partnership with Plant-It 2020, a nonprofit foundation that provides worldwide tree-planting services. For each Gemesis.com transaction in April, an indigenous tree was planted in a nonharvested location. According to the release, the foundation’s reforestation efforts are an attempt to reduce human hunger and thirst, save endangered species, reduce the greenhouse effect and stop desertification.

JIBNA Personal Jewelry Insurance announced the three winners of its Appraisers Dream contest. Theresa (Teri) L. Brossmer of Glendora, California won the Grand Prize, an all-expense-paid trip to the three-day conference of the Scottish Gemmological Association. Mary Reich of Albuquerque, New Mexico took second place, winning a distance-learning class from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A).
   Meghan McReynolds of Evansville, Indiana won the third prize, a year’s subscription to Gem-A.

Boston-based diamond brand Hearts On Fire has made an initial donation of $100,000 to The One Fund Boston and pledged up to $500,000 in support of its hometown efforts to help victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Between April 23 and May 31, all proceeds from sales on heartsonfire.com, excluding sales tax, will go directly to The One Fund Boston. In addition, the Copley Love Pendant is now available at authorized Hearts On Fire retailers, with all proceeds going to The One Fund Boston.

Jewelry Television (JTV) raised $80,000 for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign in February. JTV designated February “Love Your Heart” month and launched a comprehensive multimedia campaign aimed at raising awareness and educating viewers about the risks of heart disease. The company plans to support the Go Red movement on an ongoing basis.
