• Zale Corporation appointed Richard Golden as senior vice president of real estate, with overall responsibility for the company’s real estate strategy as well as all leasing, design, construction and maintenance of retail and corporate facilities. Golden was most recently director of real estate, development and land acquisition at the H-E-B Grocery Company. • The World Diamond Council (WDC) appointed Avi Paz its interim president to replace Eli Izhakoff until the next WDC elections. Izhakoff will officially step down from the role on June 30, 2013 after 13 years in the position. • The American Society of Appraisers (ASA) is partnering with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to offer advanced gemological training to gems and jewelry professionals. A pilot course, Advanced Diamond Grading, developed by GIA for ASA will be held from July 17 to 18 at GIA’s Carlsbad, California campus. Following the course, on July 19, an optional certification examination for the Master Gemological Appraiser (MGA) designation will be given. The new guide can be accessed at www.jvclegal.org. • Antiquorum Auctioneers announced the appointment of David Jarrett as horological consultant to Antiquorum USA. Jarrett, who began his career with Patek Philippe in 1991, will be based in New York.• The Israel Diamond Institute (IDI) honored Eli Izhakoff, president of the World Diamond Council (WDC), and Gaetano Cavalieri, president of CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation in Tel Aviv. Izhakoff was cited for his 33-year service and commitment to the world diamond industry. Cavalieri was honored for his extraordinary contribution to the international jewelry industry. • Moti Ganz, the chairman of the Israel Diamond Institute (IDI) Group of Companies, was presented with the first “Order of Merit Award” from the World Diamond Council (WDC) and CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation. Ganz was recognized for 25 years of public service on behalf of the global diamond industry. • Bill Boyajian, CG, is the 2013 recipient of the American Gem Society’s (AGS) Robert M. Shipley award, named for the organization’s founder. Boyajian was honored for his expertise and commitment to the field of gemology, personal business, the jewelry industry and the AGS. The author of Developing the Mind of a Leader Your Path to Lead and Inspire People, he has received numerous industry awards, including the AGS’ Triple Zero Award in 2002.• The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) issued the trademark “Michael Hill Professional Care Plan” to the jewelry retailer Michael Hill Franchise Pty. Ltd. in Australia on April 23. The trademark, registration number of 4323053, covers a wide range of products and services, including jewelry, diamonds, opals, pearls and colored gems, precious metals, watches and clocks, cases, parts and accessories such as chains, ring holders, straps and bands. Retail and wholesale services under the trademark include advertising, distributorships, marketing, business information, advisory and consulting in addition to repair and maintenance services, coppersmithing, electroplating and gilding. Also on April 23, the USPTO approved the trademark “Evermore Dream a Little Bigger” to Michael Hill with registration number of 4323029. “Evermore Dream a Little Bigger” consists of stylized wording, wherein the letter “V” is represented by a stylized cut gem. This trademark also applies to the aforementioned products and services under the franchise’s brand. The USPTO issued the trademark “Diamond Treasures” to ShopNBC’s parent company, ValueVision Media Inc. of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, on April 30. Assigned registration number 4327877, the trademark can be used for branding and diamond jewelry. The USPTO approved the trademark “Harmony Eternally In Love” for Rosy Blue Jewelry Inc. of New York on April 30. Assigned registration number 4329377, the term applies to jewelry, diamonds and precious and semiprecious stones.• Luster Industries Pvt. Ltd. and Phantom Holdings LLC created the Phantom Luxury Group LLC. Nehal Modi will be chairman and CEO for the three operating divisions in the U.S., Phantom Diamonds, Phantom Refining and Phantom Luxury Group. • PhotoScribe Technologies introduced the LMS650XS excimer laser that can inscribe both high- and low-contrast carbon inscriptions at an economical price for the first time, according to the company. The LMS laser provides the ability to inscribe multiple areas of the diamond, such as the table or crown facet, expands branding capabilities and provides security via invisible encoded barcodes. • Gleim The Jeweler, Smithworks Fine Jewelry and Rubel & Ménasché, part of the Dali Diamond Group, announced their participation in the Diamonds for Good Membership Program of the Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.). The program is designed to highlight a company’s commitment to giving back and supporting D.E.F.’s mission of empowerment through education in diamond-producing nations. • The Tanzanite Foundation received the 2013 Best of Manhattan Award in the Community Organizations category by the Manhattan Award Program. Each year, the Manhattan Award Program honors local companies whose marketing programs enhance the image of small businesses through service to their customers and community. To date, the Tanzanite Foundation has built two schools, a medical clinic and a community center and pumps fresh water daily into the local mining community in Tanzania. • Jewelry Judge opened a new location in San Antonio, Texas, which will be led by Stephanie Rosenlund, a third generation jeweler and gemologist. Jewelry Judge is a network of jewelry appraisal professionals with eleven offices located throughout the United States.• DGSE Companies Inc. announced the relocation and consolidation of its corporate operations, including multiple branch headquarters and personnel, into a single national headquarters. The new headquarters for DGSE will be at 15850 Dallas Parkway, Suite 140, Dallas Texas.• Joseph Tenhagen, the former associate director of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA) passed away. Over the course of a 40-year career, Tenhagen served as president of the Accredited Gemologist Association (AGA) and published the Diamond Value Index from 1995 to 1998.• Lord Ian Balfour, the noted diamond historian, passed away. Lord Balfour, who worked at De Beers for many years, was the author of Famous Diamonds that chronicled the history of some of the world’s legendary diamonds, including the Hope Diamond, the Cullinan I, the Koh-i-Noor among many others.
