Past Present

Turn celebrity mania into a marketing opportunity.

By Amber Michelle
Fashion takes a cue from the past for fall 2013/winter 2014 as apparel designers draw inspiration from the 1920s, 1930s and 1960s. The balance of male and female is seen in pieces borrowed from menswear paired with delicate lingerie looks. The season is defined by the big cover-up — arms, legs, shoulders, necks are all hidden away. The oversized trend that started in the spring continues into the colder weather with big, droopy sweaters and pants layered together or coupled with long skirts. Hemlines are hitting new lows as fashion draws upon early-twentieth-century style for a modern chic. Clothes aren’t the only ones that are amply proportioned, so are patterns and prints, especially plaids in an up-to-date palette of colors. Lush fabrics — velvet, lace and leather — are must-haves. In its newest incarnation, leather is quilted, embossed, tooled, eyeleted and often mixed with fabric for a contemporary, upscale take on a rock’n’roll favorite, some of which found its way onto the runways. White and black singly, or married together, continue as fall fashion favorites. Camel, purple, 50 shades of gray and pink are also colors to watch in a season filled with a vintage vibe.
