Tales From the Catwalk

Fall/Winter 2016/17

By Amber Michelle
“Have it your way” continues on as the motto in fashion for the upcoming cold-weather months. Here are some of the top trends identified by Marylou Luther at the Fashion Group International’s ready-to-wear presentation for fall/winter 2016/2017.

Romance, 1970s boho chic and big-shouldered, androgynous looks from the 1980s, as well as gender-free styles are primary influencers for the season.
Leather is perennially popular and denim takes center stage for chilly days.
Black velvet is hot, pink is cool, pastels rule and winter white lives up to its name.
Cognac-toned browns are palatable while yellow and green bring a hint of spring to winter. Classic navy stays true to form and red, from warm wines to siren brights, heats things up.
Layering has become a mainstay as it makes apparel seasonless, giving more importance to the blouse and big sweaters.
Pant widths from cigarette to palazzos and flares are chic; crop lengths are most directional. Jumpsuits continue to take flight as a wardrobe go-to.
All lengths, when it comes to dresses, are accepted, but midis are major.
The shirtdress continues its reign, as does the quintessential little black dress. Full skirts falling to mid-calf are favored.
Prints and patterns abound, with flowers popping up, words leading the way and butterflies fluttering about. Animal themes are another favorite, with house cats slinking into the mix of wild cats.
Oversized pieces are in the comfort zone.
