The beauty of a heart is that it means something different to everyone. To some, the shape is romantic and delicate. Others see strength and empowerment. There are saccharine hearts, edgy hearts, retro hearts, colorful hearts, feminist hearts and simple heart silhouettes. Interpretations of this classic theme are myriad.
And if you have attended any jewelry exhibitions in the past year, you will have noticed that the humble yet versatile heart
is enjoying a revival.
Hearts, indeed, cover a broad spectrum and are malleable in the hands of a designer. But the more exciting à la mode heart jewels fluttering off the bench are pop-inspired. Flushes of color — particularly the classic red and pink hues — or bold retro elements give these pieces a fashionable playfulness.
Texture is important, too, as designers experiment with stamping, engraving, and using clusters of gems to create multiple dimensions. There’s romance in the air, but these are big-girl hearts, not pretty-princess fripperies.
