NUM AND DE BEERS SETTLE ANNUAL WAGE NEGOTIATIONS

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited (DBCM) have concluded an agreement on improvements to wages and conditions of employment.

The parties have averted industrial action by concluding this Agreement following a wage dispute, conciliation and the eventual issue of a certificate by the CCMA that the dispute remained unresolved.

The Agreement includes an 8% increase to monthly pensionable wages to all members in the Bargaining Unit. In terms of this Agreement the new minimum basic rate of pay will be R3 348 per month effective from May 2005.

Peter Bailey, chief negotiator of the NUM said: “The union is satisfied with the agreement reached after difficult and protracted negotiations.”

Wayne Smerdon, negotiator for De Beers commented that: “Despite difficult negotiations and the significant impact of external factors, the parties ultimately reached a settlement which meets the needs of the Company and the NUM.

Both parties welcome the Agreement as it reflects their entrenched commitment to engage on labour issues in a manner that seeks mutually beneficial solutions.
