RAPAPORT... De Beers Marine in South Africa agreed to increase the wages of its 70 sea-going staff by between 8.5 and 10 percent, the diamond company stated.

De Beers signed the wage settlement with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) after the union warned of a possible strike. NUM also accused De Beers of stepping back on previously agreed percentages.

Negotiations between the parties began in July and the settlement runs from April 1, 2007 to March, 31 2008.

“Today’s settlement bodes well for the future and we look forward to harmonious relations with the NUM," said De Beers Marine general manager, Burger Greeff.
