RAPAPORT... Berkshire Hathaway’s retail segment saw revenues increase 2 percent to $652 million in the third quarter ending September 30, 2010. Pre-tax earnings rose 36 percent for the period, the company reported without giving the figure.

Berkshire’s retail unit consists of four home furnishing businesses, See’s Candies and three jewelry firms: Borsheim’s Jewelry, Helzberg Diamonds and Ben Bridge Jeweler.

During the first nine months of the year, combined retail revenues grew 3 percent to $2.01 billion, while pre-tax earnings rose 56 percent.

The company, which is run by Warren Buffett, noted that increases in earnings this year were primarily attributed to the home furnishing unit, “which benefitted from a relatively modest increase in sales and ongoing cost containment efforts.”
