U.S. Retailers Report April Sales

RAPAPORT... Department stores and luxury retailers reported April sales increases that were largely in-line with expectations given easy year on year comparisons with the Easter sales cycle hitting late in the month compared with 2010.

Department store Macy's reported a 10.8 percent jump in same-store sales and a 10.9 percent increase in total sales. JCPenney experienced a 3.4 percent increase in overall sales with same-store figures up by 6.4 percent.  Kohl's reported a 10.2 percent increase in same-store sales and a 12.1 percent rise in total sales.

Nordstrom, which expanded its stores in Delaware and Colorado during April, reported total sales were up 14.2 percent and same-store sales rose 7.6 percent.  Neiman Marcus reported strength from the jewelry counter while total sales rose 8.5 percent. Sales from luxury retailer Saks rose only 4.2 percent overall, but same-store sales improved by 5.8 percent.

Bon-Ton reported a 5.1 percent increase in same-store sales for April and a 4.6 percent jump in overall sales, however, the retailer stated that first-quarter sales fell.  Bon-Ton added that jewelry was a strong product performer in April. Comparable store sales at Dillard's in April rose 11 percent and total sales rose by 10 percent.
Member-only clubs BJ's and Costco both benefitted from higher gasoline sales. Nonetheless, same-store sales at BJ's rose 4.1 percent and total sales rose 12.2 percent. Costco reported same-store sales were up 6 percent and total sales rose 17 percent.

In other retail news,  Sears warned investors to expect a 3.6 percent decline in same-store sales for its first quarter. Sears also warned of a loss of between $145 million and $195 million.
