(Rapaport…January 16, 2003) The Diamond Trading Company (DTC) has increased prices for most of their rough assortments (boxes). While prices for some items decreased, we estimate the DTC increased average overall prices by 4-5%. Larger better quality rough such as the 5-10 carat gem boxes were more expensive and only available in very limited quantities, while prices for 3/4-8/4 spotted were lower.

We estimate this week’s sight at $460 million, lower than most analyst expectations. While there is concern about the international economy and a possible Iraqi war, rough prices and demand are firm. Next month’s sight may be larger, as increased liquidity develops in the Indian market as U.S. retailers make payments after the important holiday season.
