RAPAPORT... At least three explosions shook Mumbai on Wednesday with two hitting the heart of the city’s diamond district. Unconfirmed reports indicated that at least 21 people were killed in the blasts while more than 100 more people were injured, according to the CNN.

"This was a coordinated attack by terrorists," AFP reported Home Minister P. Chidambaram as saying while appealing for calm.

Two of the explosions went off almost simultaneously at rush hour around 6:30 pm in South Mumbai, at Opera House and Zaveri Bazaar, which are both focal points for the city’s diamond and jewelry trade. The third blast shook the center of the city.

“In the beginning it did seem like the attack targeted the diamond industry because the first two blasts took off in the areas that are relevant to our trade,” said Pooja Kotwani, managing director of Rapaport India. “The blasts were extremely loud and we were worried they were close to the last attacks that occurred in Mumbai.”

Following the blasts, Kotwani reported that there was chaos in the area with people being rushed to the hospital.

The city has been placed on red alert. Kotwani said she does not expect the blasts to have a long term impact on business activity in the sector.

The Times of India reported that the Home Ministry confirmed the blasts were a terror attack.

The BBC reported that the blasts coincided with the birthday of Mohammad Ajmal Amir Qasab, the sole surviving gunman from the 2008 Mumbai attacks which killed nearly 170 people.
