RAPAPORT... Five men were indicted on charges of conspiracy and interstate transportation of stolen property after they were arrested for stealing up to $1.4 million of diamonds in seven jewelry stores across Oregon, California, Tennessee and Nevada between December 2010 and January 2011.

The perpetrators, Michael Young, 39, of Davenport Florida; Ernest Remor, 36, of Spring Hill, Florida; Trey Adams, 27, of Charlotte, North Carolina;  Victor Lupis, 25, of Monroe, North Carolina,  and Jack Cannon, 25, of Madison, Georgia, had planned to sell the stolen diamonds in Pennsylvania.

Young and Remor appeared before a U.S. Magistrate judge on July 21, and remain in custody pending their trial date of September 27, while the three other defendants will appear before a judge at a later date.  If charged, defendants could face up to 15 years in prison and a minimum $500,000 fine.

''This is not some Hollywood fantasy film filled with A-list stars and fancy cars,'' said Alan J. Peters, acting special agent in charge of the FBI in Oregon. “This is a criminal case with real victims stretched across the U.S. Thanks to great partnerships with the Portland Police Bureau and assistance from Salem Police and the U.S. Marshals Service, we have cracked this diamond ring.”

Portland Police Chief Michael Reese added that the efforts of local and federal officials ''helped build a strong case against those who were responsible. Now they can be held accountable.''
