GIA Gemfest 2011 Hong Kong to Start September 20

RAPAPORT... The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will kick-off its two-day Gemfest 2011 in Hong Kong on September 20 with a presentation by  Kenneth Scarratt, the managing director of GIA Southeast Asia,  titled ''Natural Pearling from P. Maxima off Western Australia.''

Scarratt will review the history of Australian pearling indstury and describe a recent expedition to the “80-mile beach” where wild shell is still fished. Several historic relics of pearl diving will also be on display.

The Gemfest will resume on September 22 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition where the GIA will host a breakfast at 8:30 a.m. to launch its full day of events.  These include a book signing by industry experts Andrew Coxon and Yasukazu Suwa, a commemoration of GIA’s 80th anniversary and a presentation by the president of De Beers Diamond Institute, Andrew Coxon, and the chairman of Suwa & Son Inc., Yasukazu Suwa, entitled “A New Way of Looking at Diamonds” seminar.
