RAPAPORT... Birks & Mayors reported that net sales rose 5 percent year on year to $79.5 million for the period of October 30, 2011 through December 24. Same-store sales rose 3 percent with comparable-store sales in Canada increasing by 4 percent and by only 2 percent in the U.S. Stronger sales results in both regions reflected an increase in the average sale, according to the retailer.

Thomas A. Andruskevich, the president of Birks & Mayors, said, ''The holiday season began with good sales momentum, however, during the final weeks before Christmas we experienced strong declines in customer traffic in our stores. As such, our sales increases during the holiday period were somewhat softer than what we would have liked to see.''

Birks & Mayors was still able to increase gross margin and as a result, it expects to deliver improved operating performance compared with Christmas season 2010.
