Number of Online Video Ads Hit a Record in April

Advertisements Reach 181M Viewers

RAPAPORT... Digital matrix firm comScore Inc. reported that the number of U.S. Internet users who watched online video in April rose 4.9 percent year on year to 181 million. As a point of reference, the U.S. civilian population is about 310 million. On average, the number of hours Internet viewers spent watching online video surged 31.8 percent to 21.7 hours and those viewers watch a record number of advertisements  during the month, 8 billion. The number of video ads in April represented 40.3 percent year on year increase. 

 Video ads accounted for 20.5 percent of all videos viewed and 1.6 percent of all minutes spent viewing video online.

Google websites, including YouTube, again ranked as the top online video content property in April with 157.6 million unique viewers, followed by Yahoo! Sites with 60.6 million users, VEVO with 53.6 million and with 44.3 million, according to comScore.

But Hulu delivered the highest number of advertising impressions at 1.6 billion, while Google's properties ranked second overall with 1.3 billion ad views, followed by BrightRoll Video Network with 943 million, with 881 million and TubeMogul Video Ad Platform with 831 million.

 Video ads reached 51 percent of the U.S. Internet population an average of 53 times during the month, comScore concluded.

Hulu also delivered the highest frequency of video ads to its viewers with an average of 51 per users, while ESPN delivered an average of 26 ads per viewer.
